Huawei has officially announced its self-developed microkernel-based, distributed operating system but there may be some confusion out there in our readers about the name and we’re here with some clarification on this subject.

Development of Hongmeng OS includes 4-5000 developers, was originally planned to release in 2020

Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer BG, Harmony stands for the English pronunciation of Hongmeng (Chinese character), which means the ‘beginning of the earth’. The company is using Hongmeng OS name in the domestic (Chinese) market and HarmonyOS for the non-domestic markets.

Back in May, Huawei filed the trademarks for ‘Hongmeng’ around the world in operating system categories and the support for various devices. In July, Huawei registered a new trademark for the name ‘Harmony’ at EUIPO under operating system category.

According to Huawei, Hongmeng OS will be first released on August 10 with Honor Smart Screen (TV).
