HarmonyOS (Hongmeng OS) Eligible Devices
In August 2019, Huawei launched its self-developed operating system, HarmonyOS, also known as Hongmeng OS. This new OS is a new microkernel-based, distributed operating system designed to deliver a diverse user experience across all devices and scenarios.
Initially, the OS only supported Huawei smart TVs. However, with the growing U.S. pressure, Huawei has increased its speed and preparation to bring the HarmonyOS on more platforms.
At Huawei Developer Conference (HDC) 2020, Huawei announced HarmonyOS 2.0, which supports more platforms compared to its predecessor.
According to the official roadmap, HarmonyOS 2.0 will support devices with up to 128MB RAM, such as smart wearables and other IoT devices. In 2021, It’ll support devices up to 4GB RAM, such as tablets and entry-level smartphones. By the end of 2021, this RAM limit will increase over 4GB and open a way for the support of flagship smartphones.
At an event on June 2, 2021, Huawei officially launched HarmonyOS for smartphone devices announced a roadmap of upgrading almost every possible device that goes way back up to 2016. This upgrade plan is surely something and both Huawei and Honor phones are part of this journey.

Customized HarmonyOS software skin already prepared by a third party phone maker
Till now, a number of different companies have used the HarmonyOS software ecosystem in different categories of consumer products. However, a HarmonyOS phone outside of the Huawei brand is still awaited.
Regarding this, a tipster from Weibo has brought us some interesting information, which reveals that a phone maker has already customized the HarmonyOS operating system.
According to the screenshot linked below, the phone was launched with a different software version and can upgrade with the newly customized HarmonyOS 2 based software system.
On the other hand, the software version cannot be identified or the name of the software itself but the version sure matches the HarmonyOS 2 build used in Huawei phones. Also, there’s a brand new software icon, which is tagged on the top of the build version.
It’s also suggested that this device could be the recently launched Maimang 10SE, which is solely launched by China Telecom and Huawei has stepped out of its branding.
Yet it’s confirmed that the phone still runs an EMUI out of the box. So, there’s a high chance of this phone and its maker enabling the HarmonyOS operating system as the base of the software skin.
There’s more confirmation that is required from Huawei’s end, we’ll keep you posted on this matter.
Launched at Huawei Developer Conference 2020, HarmonyOS 2 comes with new functionalities and platform support including smartphones, tablets, wearables, and more.
Talking specially about smartphones, this new OS has a number of new changes in the user interface such as a new control panel, service center, notification center, super device feature, and many new additions that make the user interface enjoyable.
