New Kirin chipset for low-to-mid-range phones could spark competition, says Researcher

The new Kirin 9000s chipset has created a positive impact since its release and the launch of a new low-to-mid-range Kirin chip would bring new competition in the market, says market researcher Canalys.

The Kirin chipset is developed by Huawei’s chip-designing subsidiary – HiSilicon. The firm used to print Kirin designs via Taiwan’s TSMC. After the 2019′ US Ban, TSMC was restricted from taking new HiSilicon chip orders.

Subsequently, Huawei’s chip production fell apart, and it was goodbye to the new flagship Kirin chipset. At that time, Kirin 9000 was the only flagship chip processed with 5nm technology.

With the unveiling of Huawei Mate 60 Pro, teardown specialists – TechInsights found that the phone is using an advanced chipset. This was surprising news as Huawei brought this new chip under US sanctions.

The specifications app revealed the chipset is identified as “Kirin 9000s” but Huawei has not published any details about its processing technology or the chipset itself.

Furthermore, it has 5G network access, a key element to the discussion about this new chip. The last 5G Huawei flagship phone was the Huawei Mate 40 series with the Kirin 9000 chip released in 2020.

Mid-range:

Past information shows that Huawei is also preparing to launch a mid-range chipset. This would be used in the next Nova series smartphone and appeared as Kirin 830 (tentatively). Since the Chinese company has already tried its luck with the flagship phones, the company could now focus on mid-range and budget phones featuring Kirin chips.

“If Huawei expands the new Kirin chipset into its low-to-mid-range portfolio in the future, it has the potential to disrupt the competitive dynamic among leading vendors,” said Canalys Research Analyst Lucas Zhong.

These two segments have the potential to severely change the shipment outlook of any smartphone company.
