Huawei ranked among top 3 cybersecurity technology patent holder in 2023

Chinese firm Huawei ranked in the top 3 global patent holdings in cybersecurity technology as of August 2023. Data collected by Nikkei Asia reveals that this ranking is based on patents registered across 95 countries and regions.

According to the tally, U.S. computer manufacturer – IBM comes first with 6463 patents. Huawei ranked second with 4735 patents and Tencent comes third with 4803 patents. The top also includes Alilbaba’s Ant Group in sixth with 3922 patents and Alibaba Group Holdings with 3122 patents.

Hiroko Osaka, head of marketing in Asia for LexisNexis Japan’s Intellectual property department said that there’s been a major increase in filings by Chinese companies since 2018. In 2019, the US banned Huawei from purchasing important technologies sold by US companies or made with US technologies.
