In May 2019, Huawei filed a trademark registration application – Hongmeng and it was rejected by the Chinese State Intellectual Property Authority (CSIPA). However, the Hongmeng text was already trademarked by Huizhou Qibei Technology earlier.

The CSIPA refused Huawei’s trademark application of Hongemneg because it may cause confusion among the consumer. Also, the Chinese tech giant previously filed litigation against CSIPA to get the Hongmeng trademark but it fails to justify it.

A few days ago, it was reported that the CSIPA has announced that the Hongemeng trademark will officially be transferred to Huawei from Huizhou Qibei Technology with all trademark rights.

The trademark details reveal that the “Hongmeng” trademark is registered under 42-class design research and the 9-class scientific instrument. This trademark has been transferred from Huizhou Kibei Technology Co., Ltd. However, the current trademark status is “Administrative Litigation”.

Why Hongmeng is so important for Huawei?

Huawei has invested 5 years in the development of its own distributed operating system, HarmonyOS. This new OS is also known as Hongmeng OS, and the entire development of Hongmeng is derived from the meaning of Hongmeng, that’s why the company did not want to lose this name.
