  • Huawei used ASML equipment to make new Kirin 5G chipset
  • ASML is banned from supplying products to Chinese companies

Huawei and its chipset supplier Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) used equipment from ASML to produce the new Kirin 9000s chipset, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Anonymous related to this matter said that the chipmaker used various combinations of tools and ASML’s deep ultraviolet machines to form a machine in order to make new chipsets. Following this report, ASML dropped 2.1 percent in Amsterdam.

Kirin 9000s:

In late August, Huawei launched a new smartphone – Mate 60 Pro online. Later on, a teardown from TechInsights made surprising revelations that the phone is using a new Kirin chip. The key element of surprise is its advanced processing technology and 5G network access.

It was also said that the chip is proceeded by SMIC, China’s largest chip producer. Both of these companies are blacklisted by the US Commerce Department and not allowed to purchase any American technologies. This fact prompted a huge question about how SMIC was able to manufacture new chips while serving US sanctions.

ASML Ban:

As of 2023, ASML Holding stands as the largest supplier for the semiconductor industry and the sole supplier in the world of extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) photolithography machines that are required to manufacture the most advanced chips.

Therefore its existence is key in all of the discussions regarding advanced chip production. Subsequently, the US has already restricted ASML from supplying to Chinese customers. And preventing chip manufacturers such as SMIC from growing further and making new developments in existing designs or advanced chipsets. Similarly, the US banned Huawei from purchasing US products in order to hurt its mobile and telecom business.

In the meantime, SMIC or Huawei has not commented on anything about this report on producing Kirin 9000s using ASML equipment.
