Kirin 990A: Huawei’s first auto chipset, installed in ArcFox Alpha S smart car

For a long time, Huawei and BAIC have been working together on the upcoming model, ArcFox Alpha S smart car with self-driving automobile technology. Huawei doesn’t release its own branded car but cooperates with other automobile manufacturers to launch smart cars.

According to the latest news, on April 17, 2021, BAIC’s new energy brand – Jihu and Huawei have jointly launched the first smart luxury pure electric car ArcFox Alpha S in Shanghai.

This electric car comes inbuilt with Huawei HarmonyOS (Hongmeng OS) operating system and powered by Kirin 990A in-vehicle processor that supports 5G network and provides 3.5TOPs computing power.

Recently, a Weibo tipster discloses the core configurations of the first Huawei car chipset, but the manufacturing process is still not known. You can check the key specification of Kirin 990A below.

To be mentioned, It’s the first time, when Huawei’s Taishan architecture used in making car chip. Earlier, it was often used in server chips.

In terms of price, the ArcFox Alpha S smart car’s standard version priced at 251, 900 to 344, 900 yuan, and the Huawei H1 version starts at 388, 900 to high-end version 429,900 yuan.

A few days ago, conversation between the car manufacturer BAIC and their investors caught the headlines. According to reports, BAIC confirms to deliver the ArcFox Alpha S series with Huawei Hi by the further quarter of this year.

New information on this matter reveals BAIC will sarts deploy the Huawei Hi ArcFox Alpha S from November in small batches. However, the company didn’t mention any specific date but it’s expected to be exposed soon.

It’s worth noting that the first models were introduced at the 2021 Shanghai Auto show in April this year with four different variants. Later, this high-end electric car exceeded over 1,000 orders to experience the capability of Huawei.

Huawei Hi ArcFox Alpha S:

This is the first smart car to come with the HarmonyOS cockpit and Huawei’s exclusive technologies. The inbuilt Kirinn 990A chip produces 3.5TOPs computing power with a strong and real-time 5G network connection.

Furthermore, its lidar arrangement consists of 3 lidars, 6-millimeter wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, 9 ADS cameras, and 4 surround-view cameras. Besides, its high-precision map can easily navigate in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen while the other locations are also being installed.

Moving ahead to its ADS system, it offers three-level of ADS supports including NCA mode, ICA+ mode, and ICA mode. In addition, the operation is as easy as entering the location and activate the cruise lever.

This high-end electric car will enter the market with a starting price of RMB 388,900 for the basic version. Meanwhile, the advanced Huawei Hi ArcFox Alpha S model will cost RMB 429,900.

No autonomous driving model from Huawei and Volkswagen: Response

Recently, Huawei talks about the collaboration with Volkswagen for the autonomous driving models and clear the rumors. The company stated it doesn’t want to raise any flash hopes to its supporters about which isn’t going to happen.
