Huawei is working on its next “Kirin 990” chipset with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) which is likely to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2019, the media reported.

The processor would feature the second-generation 7nm process and is likely to debut as the first 5G-ready chip from the company.

“Industry chain sources claim that the Huawei has already started working on the Kirin 990 SoC. The cost of testing the Kirin 990 chipset is very expensive. Each test requires an investment of around 200 million Yuan,” Gizmo China reported on Friday.

The processor is expected to arrive with “Balong 5000 5G” modem.

“The more advanced fabrication technology that will be used to manufacture the Kirin 990 offers 20 percent increased transistor density, 10 percent reduced power consumption, and 10 percent improved overall performance compared to the chipsets built using the first-generation 7nm chipset from TSMC,” The Android Headlines reported.

The tech giant launched its Kirin 980 chip at IFA in Berlin in August that powers its flagship devices. The chipset is scheduled to debut in the Indian market in the fourth quarter of this year.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu had confirmed that the first smartphone to be powered by the Kirin 980 chipset will be from Mate 20 series which is to be launched in London on October 16.

Kirin 980 is the “world’s first” SoC to sport a modem that supports LTE Category 21 which supports a downlink of 1.4Gbps, Huawei said.

Shortage of Chip:

After U.S. sanctions in May 2019, Huawei has to face rounds of restrictions that prohibit the company from purchasing new U.S. technologies and harms Huawei’s interest to build new devices for the consumers.

The biggest issue that has been generated by the U.S. restriction is the shortage of important chipsets for both smartphones and network equipment. Talking specifically, the company has been outcasted from the top 5 global smartphone makers.

Thereafter, the Chinese tech giant has decided to launch as many as decide possible and prepare to survive in this harsh climate created by the U.S. government.

New license:

Amid all of these assumptions and leaks, 113 suppliers have obtained export licenses worth 61 billion U.S. dollars, allowing them to supply Huawei. On the other hand, china’s SMIC suppliers have obtained 188 licenses worth about 42 billion U.S. dollars.

Over 90% of the license applications submitted by SMIC’s suppliers were approved, and 69% of the license requests submitted by suppliers that shipped to Huawei were approved.

Of course, most of the licenses obtained by the supply chain are for non-sensitive products. For example, 80 of the 113 licenses obtained by Huawei’s US supply chain members and 121 of the 188 licenses approved by SMIC suppliers are not supplying licenses for sensitive products.

Although, the information about these licenses remains undisclosed but this is a major development for the Chinese tech maker that could help it to produce more new products.
