BT and Vodafone, UK’s top mobile operators are considering to urge PM Boris Johnson not to risk the rollout of 5G mobile networks in the country by banning Huawei, says a report.

Telecoms industry sources said that Philip Jansen, BT chief executive, and Nick Read, who runs Vodafone, drafting a letter to be sent to the PM within days saying that the ban on Huawei could hurt the growth of Britain’s digital economy.

Last week, a set of senior US officials told British ministers that using Huawei technology in 5G networks would put transatlantic intelligence-sharing at risk.

MI5 head, Andrew Parker also said he saw ‘no reason to think’ that using Huawei would change the intelligence-sharing relationship with the US.

In the meantime, all major mobile networks in the UK including Vodafone, BT, EE, and Three launched 5G services using Huawei equipment and some government officials admit that blocking Huawei would cost a big deal for consumers.

Amid the U.S. pressure, Boris Johnson is set to make a final decision on Huawei later this month and it’s expected that the PM may give the green light to the largest telecom equipment maker.
