Although the concept of generative AI is new, Huawei has used AI in smartphones for quite some time now. Soon, Huawei would introduce a new Kirin chipset with better Generative AI performance.

Input coming from a tipster reveals that the tech maker has been working on a new mobile processor that brings powerful AI performance. Meanwhile, there is no clarity over the chipset’s identity.

Generative AI:

With the release of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, many of the phone makers have announced their participation in the generative AI technologies. All of these companies are adopting better Large Language Models (LLMs) and machine learning in phone assistants and other parts of mobile UI.

With the new LLM voice assistant, you can personalize your smartphone’s settings, get better suggestions, and even sort your personal files and folders from in-device content.

Moreover, the phone could make videos from your gallery based on the voice command. Some might even make a full script on a topic that you may want to write.

Da Vinci Architecture:

Huawei had a huge interest in AI in chip design even before it was banned by the US. In 2018, Huawei unveiled the “Da Vinci” AI chip architecture. It confirmed that this new AI core design was researched and developed by HiSilicon, Huawei’s chip designing subsidiary.

Da Vinci architecture was first used in the Huawei Ascend AI chip for enterprise customers. In technical terms, Da Vinci’s architecture is designed based on AI computing features and a high-performance 3D cube computing engine.

Next, Huawei brought this AI architecture to the Kirin platform. In 2019, Huawei unveiled Kirin 990, a 7nm chip with first-generation Da Vinci architecture with a separate NPU section featuring 1 large Ascend lite core and one Ascend small core.

In the following year, the 5nm Kirin 9000 octa-core chip unveiled Huawei’s Da Vinci Architecture 2.0. It has 2 Ascend Lite and 1 Ascend Tiny NPU core.

The benchmark performance of Da Vinci AI architecture was quite as compared to other chipsets. Therefore, Huawei may have a better chance of bringing a powerful AI performance with a new Kirin chipset.
