Huawei announced the next phase of the HarmonyOS 4 upgrade and this time, the company has chosen 5-year-old flagship phones. This is very joyful news for the users of important flagships including the Huawei P30 and Mate 20 series.

Before this announcement, Huawei P30 and Mate 20 users had been continuously asking for the HarmonyOS 4 upgrade. The doubt in this matter comes directly from Huawei’s own campaign because the initial HarmonyOS 4 roadmap has no mention of Huawei P30 and older smartphones.

Both Huawei P30 and Mate 20 series phones are the latest P and Mate-series devices to feature Google Mobile Services (GMS). These are also the most popular devices in the segment from the company until the Mate 60 series.

Launched in 2019, the Huawei P30 series comes with EMUI 9.1 out of the box. On the other hand, the Huawei Mate 20 series was unboxed with EMUI 9.0 in 2018. After upgrading to EMUI 11, the company transitioned these smartphones to HarmonyOS 2 and later on HarmonyOS 3 in China.

Meanwhile, global smartphone users are still served with EMUI 12. However, there is still no confirmation about their EMUI 13 rollout status. On October 30, Huawei shared details that HarmonyOS 4 has surpassed 100 million downloads. This is by far the fastest upgrade in the past three versions of HarmonyOS.

The new software update for these old smartphones will enable a better user experience with added new features. Therefore this new HarmonyOS 4 rollout announcement for up to 5-year-old devices is nothing less than a big surprise.

According to the rollout plan, the Huawei P30 series, Mate 20 series, Honor 20, V20, and Magic 2 phones are scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2024.
