WhatsApp may bring Snapchat-like screenshot detection feature for status

WhatsApp aims to enhance app privacy in every aspect, and it looks like the company is preparing such a feature that can tell you who is keeping an eye on your life – screenshot detection for status. The feature seems to be underway.

Android Authority noted that WhatsApp could follow Snapchat’s footsteps in terms of privacy and introduce a feature called screenshot detection for status.

Snapchat launched a screenshot-detecting feature for its stories years back. From the name, it is used to tell the user whenever any of his/her contacts capture their Snapchat stories. Now, WhatsApp may bring a similar tool for its app users.

Spotted in the teardown of WhatsApp Android 2.25.12.19 version, a new screenshot feature is coming for status updates. As soon as the teardown team tried to screenshot a status on WhatsApp, it showed a prompt saying:

“WhatsApp detected this screenshot.
Screen capture blocked. To protect everyone’s privacy on WhatsApp, this screen capture has been blocked.”

Even though the feature shows this prompt, it doesn’t notify users when someone takes a screenshot of their status. This could be because the feature is still in development. Though it suggests that WhatsApp may soon bring such a capability via a stable release.
