US rules Nvidia chip access

Biden administration recently announced new chipset export controls ahead of Trump’s sworn. Although some US supporters oppose these rules as they restrict their access to the Nvidia AI chip. Looks like the US needs to rethink its decisions.

A report reveals that Poland and Israel officials are now defending US rules limiting Nvidia AI chip access. While the aim is to restrict advanced tech exports to China and ban firms, the latest regulations are also affecting certain US allies.

New chip regulations ensure that global AI tech development should meet US protocols. It further divides the world into three categories for chip sales:

  • First: US supporters and close allies that won’t suffer from any restrictions.
  • Second: Companies that can access only a limited amount of US AI chipsets
  • Third: Firms that are blacklisted and should be barred from buying powerful SoCs or techs.

The problem is – new export regulations have put many EU members such as Poland and Israel in the second-tier category. As a result, they will struggle to purchase the required amount of chipsets and need to settle with the limitations.

Krzysztof Gawkowski – Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister shared his thoughts on X saying that the US has made confusing rules this time. He further said these words:

“The decision of the United States administration on the rules for the export of GPU-type microprocessors is incomprehensible to me and is not based on any substantive premises. The countries of the European Union in relations with the US should be treated in the same way.”

He also directed Poland’s Foreign Minister – Radoslaw Sikorski and EU chief Henna Virkkunen to pay attention to the issue and try to resolve it at the earliest.

On the other hand, Israel called an urgent meeting on Wednesday discussing how new limitations can harm its AI development. EU also mentioned that the latest US rules are blocking Nvidia AI chip routes for certain member states which isn’t good!
