US says illegal supply of TSMC chips to Huawei is a ‘huge concern’

US is quite bothered about the illegal supply of TSMC chips to Huawei and Chinese companies. One of the US Commerce Department representatives recently shared his concern over the unlawful act of shipping advanced SoCs to China.
Jeffery Kessler, a key representative under the US Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, has been nominated by Trump. He was asked for good suggestions over the secret supply of TSMC chips to Huawei in China despite US sanctions.
Kessler was further asked to share his thoughts on the export controls. The nomination hearing included better changes for the US government and took place in the Senate Banking Committee. On this, Kessler answered in the following words:
“This is a huge concern. It is critical to ensure that we have strong enforcement,” said Jeffery Kessler.
Besides, the nominee added that the Commerce Department of Bureau of Industry and Security should use the complete level of the enforcement and penalty authorities available to it to stop such ongoing attempts at the earliest.
Huawei has become the focal point of the Chinese AI industry. The firm’s efforts and improvements in the chip field are eventually helping the native country to meet its AI goals. Although that’s a “huge concern” for the US authorities.
TSMC and Huawei controversy came into the spotlight when TechInsights found a TSMC-made SoC in Huawei’s AI chip product. Regardless of being banned by the US government, the Chinese company is somehow receiving TSMC processors.
Following this incident, TSMC cut ties with many Chinese companies as the Taiwanese chipmaker suspected them of supplying TSMC chips to Huawei unlawfully.
Sophgo is one of these companies and is considered a major suspect in this chip dispute. US and China tech war is taking new turns. While the former is busy increasing restrictions, the latter is seeing “positive changes” in the AI and chip fields.
A major credit goes to Huawei as the company is not only improving its chip production but also showing improvements in the AI processor performance.
