US may lose ground to China’s Huawei in AI, warns Microsoft
Microsoft has recently published a blog on its official site warning the US to take significant measures if it wants to remain competitive against China’s Huawei in the AI race. Otherwise, the table will turn to the Chinese firm as in the 5G battle.
On January 3, Brad Smith – the Vice Chairman and President of Microsoft shared a blog appealing to the US authorities to take measures toward AI technology.
Brad (Microsoft President) believes that the US may lose ground to China in AI and may face the same problems as in the 5G field against Huawei. It needs the appropriate level of government support as China is giving to its native firms.
The threat could also impact Microsoft company and make it suffer like the Lucent Technologies firm that was once under AT&T but later bought by Nokia due to several challenges. It will eventually lead to the downfall of the US tech giant.
Smith further explained how government support is important for the US companies. He wrote that earlier American and European firms like Nokia, Ericsson, Alcatel, and Lucent used to develop innovative 5G products as per global standards.
Although after the US sanctions hit Huawei, China started to support the company with government subsidies. As a result, it became the best 5G network supplier for many telecommunications in foreign markets.
“…but as Huawei invested in innovation and China’s government-subsidized sales of its products, especially across the developing world adoption of these Chinese products outpaced the competition and became the backbone of numerous countries’ telecommunications networks.” – says Brad Smith.
Huawei leading 5G race
Even though the US and many other countries initiated the rip-and-replace program to oust Huawei from the 5G network, all efforts proved in vain. It become a big network supplier in many countries, because of the accurate government support.
“…this created the technology foundation for what later became an important issue for the Trump administration in 2020, as it grappled with the presence of Huawei’s 5G products and their implications for national and cybersecurity.”
The executive added that Trump’s 2019 orders emphasized the requirement to take measures that can open markets for American AI industries while protecting them.
Overall, Smith draws attention to the point that the US authorities should match China on state subsidies towards the companies for enhancing its AI potential.
Speaking of Huawei, a major challenge for the company is to deal with trade sanctions and build a better chip without advanced chipmaking tools. How the situation will reform in the future would be worth looking forward to.
