US goes after Huawei’s AI technologies and growing dominance

Huawei AI chips and technologies are not only gaining attention on their home ground but also globally, despite US sanctions. Looks like the Chinese firm’s progress and dominance in China’s AI industry are becoming a major concern for the US.
Following the constant growth of Huawei Technologies in the Chinese AI market, the US authorities decided to ban the Ascend 910 series chips across the world.
Simply put, the Trump administration warned that companies will require a specific license to use Huawei AI chips in their technologies. In case they don’t meet this requirement, they can be imprisoned for 20 years and need to pay penalties.
US authorities added that breaking the rule will be termed a breach of US export controls. As a result, such companies may face criminal charges, monetary fines, revocation of export rights, administrative penalties, and incarceration.
Why did the US take this step?
As per the guidelines, the US believes that the Huawei Ascend AI chips are made using American technologies illegally. Hence, anyone using these AI processors without any prior authorization can be subject to legal consequences.
Perhaps, Ascend 910B, the latest 910C, and the next-gen 910D are facing a worldwide crackdown. The ban is also imposed on Chinese companies that rely on Huawei.
