Upcoming Huawei PCs could pre-install Linux instead of HarmonyOS

A recent leak says that Huawei is bringing new PCs to the consumer market, all running on Linux instead of HarmonyOS. The news is a bit shocking as many netizens were expecting the company’s first computer-dedicated software with upcoming laptops.
UncleKanshan noted the approaching Huawei PCs will pre-install Linux rather than HarmonyOS. The tipster listed the notebooks that will run on the Linux OS.
Huawei has used the Linux operating system for various of its notebooks. It has launched many PCs with separate Linux and Windows versions. For instance, the MateBook 13, 14, 15, and MateBook X Pro have both Linux and Windows editions.
The notebooks come with Deepin, which is an open-source operating system based on Linux. Being an open-source OS, it lets users to view, modify, and distribute the source code freely. It is secure and allows multiple OS to run on a single device.
Coming back, the latest leak suggests that Huawei may once again switch to Linux for its upcoming PCs. As per tipster, these devices could bring Linux OS:
- MateBook D 14 Linux
- MateBook D 16 Linux
- MateBook 14 Linux
- MateBook GT 14 Linux
- MateBook X Pro Linux

However, that contradicts the company’s senior official statement.
Yu Chengdong, the Chairman of Huawei Consumer Business, said earlier that the next-gen PCs will run on HarmonyOS and not Windows. At that time, he didn’t mention Linux or any other alternative for its MateBook products.
Moreover, all these devices are tagged with “2024” instead of 2025, which is quite puzzling at the moment. The tipster further hints that the official store can install an “unactivated” Windows system on the device as per the user’s preference.
Note: Unactivated refers to a copy of an operating system that is not validated or officially licensed and may lack certain features compared to activated builds.
Linux OS consideration for future Huawei PCs suggests the unavailability of HarmonyOS PC. It seems the company’s new software may take some more time to launch in the real world. Though, to eliminate dependency on Windows and offer a cost-effective device to consumers, Huawei may switch to Linux for upcoming MateBooks.
