Senior Huawei official responded to Pura X foldable ‘high price’ dispute

Richard Yu – the Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman earlier said that the upcoming ‘new form factor’ smartphone is affordable for everyone.

While the prediction turned out to be correct in terms of the device’s look, many netizens were disappointed upon learning the price. Some consumers even said that the new foldable isn’t an affordable product but an expensive one.

Following the Huawei Pura X price controversy, the executive responded to this matter at today’s AWE 2025 event. Richard said that consumers expect the new device to be cheaper than others. However, that’s not possible due to certain conditions.

The Chairman mentioned that the company uses Pro-grade chips, cameras, folding hinges, and other key specs. Most of these are the latest technologies, which become more expensive at production times. Thus, it costs more than an ordinary phone.

“Many people expect it to be very cheap, but in fact the cost is very high. We used the flagship phone’s chips, cameras, and other configurations, as well as its folding hinge. We used very new technology, and its cost is higher than that of the ordinary flagship candy-bar phones.” – said Richard Yu.

Richard further mentioned that Pura X is more advanced than the Mate X series foldable phone. At the same time, its price is cheaper than Mate folding devices.
