New Nvidia AI Chipset for China costs similar to Huawei processor

Nvidia has been developing new AI chipset H20 for China and in the latest edition, the company is ready to sell it in the native market at a cost that is similar to a Huawei processor. Perhaps, the chip maker tries to compete with the Chinese tech giant on the processor subject in its home ground.

In November 2023, Nvidia planned to announce three new chips for Chinese consumers namely HGX, H20, L20 PCIe, and L2 PCIe. Among these, the H20 processor counts as one of the most powerful chipsets.

However, it is worth noting that this processor is a bit less efficient than the flagship Nvidia H100 AI chip which was behind the sanction bars in October 2023. On the flip side, the specifications of the H20 have less potential than the Huawei Ascend 910B to some extent.

Currently, the American chip maker is taking pre-orders in China for the H20 AI chipset within a price range of $12000 to $15000. Meanwhile, some Chinese suppliers are promoting the respective chip for 110,000 yuan, which is slightly around the cost edge of the Huawei 910B processor (120,000 yuan).

Huawei 910B Chip:

The 910B chipset is a modified version of the older Ascend 910 processor. Chinese consumers consider it one of the most powerful and competitive AI chipsets in the region. Moreover, it can quickly process common tasks and have better performance efficiency.

Nvidia Chips in China:

After the U.S. sanctions, Nvidia has been bound by various factors to continue selling chips in China. Despite ruling 90% of the Chinese AI chip market share, the U.S. restrictions resulted in a drop in Nvidia processors in the respective region.

Speaking of the chip comparison, the major advantage the Nvidia AI H20 chipset has over Huawei 910B in China is interconnectivity speed to measure how quickly data can transfer between chips. Thus, we might see an interesting showdown between the two chips in the coming days.
