MWC25 highlights difference between Samsung G-Fold and Huawei Z Fold

Tri-fold phones have become a hot trend following the launch of the champion Huawei Mate XT. This trend continued at MWC25, where attendees witnessed many new triple-foldable smartphones, such as the Huawei Z Fold and the Samsung G-Fold.
Many interesting phone concepts appeared at the MWC 2025 event. However, tri-fold handsets have stolen the show. Something more catchy was a face-off between Huawei Z Fold (Mate XT) and Samsung G-Fold (Flex G) at the MWC25 conference.
Ross Young, Vice President at Counterpoint, shared a video on X revealing the prime differences between the Huawei Mate XT and Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold phone.
Both triple foldable handsets have a distinct style that hints at the potential of the future folding devices. While Mate XT recently went global, G-Fold will launch soon.
The shared clip shows two foldable phones exhibited at the Samsung Display Corporation (SDC) suite at MWC 2025. The first is the Flex G device with a twice-inward folding mechanism. As the name suggests, it shows a G-type folding style.
Here, the left and right display panels will fold inward toward the center. The ‘inside placement of the screen’ suggests the protection of the display from scratches.
The second device is the Samsung Flex S, which has an inward + outward folding mechanism. It is similar to the Huawei Mate XT, which reflects a Z-like folding structure. The screen wraps the phone from the outside when in a folded state.

S or Z-shaped tri-folding phones keep one part of the screen exposed to the outside world. While this mechanism is convenient to use the device for quick operations, it always poses a threat on the display from drops, scratches, and other risk factors.
Huawei, as the first tri-fold maker, launched a Z-Fold device with enhanced durability and user experience. Although it still has room for improvement.
Meanwhile, Samsung aims to fill the gaps found in Mate XT’s durability with its G-Fold triple foldable phone, prioritizing the protection of display in every aspect.
Samsung has suggested to launch its first tri-fold handset later this year. How the new phone competes with the world’s first triple foldable smartphone would be worth looking at.
