DeepSeek’s advancements have become the new focal point for US companies like Microsoft and OpenAI. The firms started digging into the technological aspects of the new AI model following an alleged claim over data breaching activities.

As noted by Bloomberg, Microsoft and OpenAI are looking into DeepSeek’s advancements these days. The companies are investing the AI startups as they believe it is obtaining data output from OpenAI technology through improper means.

Chinese AI startup DeepSeek recently launched its AI model – R1. It is a major rival to OpenAI and Gemini due to its cost-effectiveness and accessibility traits. But it has caught Microsoft’s attention over security points and led to probing.

Microsoft security researchers suspect that certain DeepSeek-linked groups as well as individuals have been pulling out large amounts of data via OpenAI API since autumn. It isn’t a big deal as most software developers often pay to use OpenAI API for their applications.

Following the doubt, Microsoft informed OpenAI about the ongoing activities in DeepSeek. These moves can eventually breach OpenAI’s terms and conditions.

The investigation went on fire after Trump’s AI tsar – David Sacks asserted that DeepSeek used OpenAI models to develop its technology. In an interview, he said:

“There’s substantial evidence that what DeepSeek did here is they distilled the knowledge out of OpenAI’s models and I don’t think OpenAI is very happy about this.”

David added that DeepSeek is dependent on the technique called ‘distillation’ where one AI model extracts the outputs of another model to build similar capabilities.

When asked OpenAI about this matter, it didn’t point out DeepSeek directly. Although it stated that many Chinese firms are putting efforts to pull out data from the US-based AI technologies. The company’s spokesperson further added:

“We know PRC (People’s Republic of China) based companies and others are constantly trying to distill the models of leading US AI companies. We engage in counter-measures to protect our IP… and believe as we go forward that it is critically important that we are working closely with the US norms to best protect the most capable models from competitors to take US tech.”
