Huawei vs MediaTek patent infringement has opened a new chapter, as the HFI Innovation firm has filed a case against the Chinese company. It looks like the case has more to see before an appropriate settlement between the two tech giants.

HFI Innovation Inc. is a subsidiary of MediaTek. It’s a Taiwanese company based in Zhubei and specializes in management consulting services. Apart from management, the firm also looks after patent management and the research sector.

According to the information, MediaTek HFI Innovation recently charged Huawei with patent infringement. The company has prosecuted over five of Huawei’s subsidiaries in China for violating certain patent rights.

These five Huawei subsidiaries are as follows:

  • Huawei Technologies Deutschland GmbH
  • Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
  • Huawei Technologies Italia Srl
  • Huawei Technologies Netherlands B.V.
  • Huawei Technologies France SASU

MediaTek’s HFI filed a case against Huawei subsidiaries at the European Unified Patent Court (UPC). Details read that HFI took this step as the company’s subsidiaries exploited an LTE patent with European patent number EP2689624.

Inputs suggest that this patent is related to the method for enhancing the physical downlink control channel. The patent is entitled “Space Search configuration”.

The HFI firm took this step on 18 June. European Unified Patent Court (UPC) in Germany has now updated the case details between the two companies.

Huawei and MediaTek have been battling for a long while. In March 2022, the Chinese phone maker tried to sign an agreement with the Taiwanese firm over patent licensing. But MediaTek denied due to the high patent fee structure.

MediaTek believed that Huawei’s deal does not fulfill fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. The Chinese OEM eventually filed a case against the Taiwanese firm for breaching 4G and 5G patents.

Last year in July, Mediatek countered the case with multiple lawsuits with its subsidiaries, like HFI, MTK Wireless, in a British court for violating three 4G/5G patents.

Huawei further challenged the chipmaker in the UK High Court to set global FRAND rates. Although the court dismissed Huawei’s claim and is still setting the rate.

The fight continued as both tech giants are still charging each other with patent violations. You can read the full story behind these cases below.
