Amid the growing US-China tech war, Malaysia has officially announced a new AI project using Huawei Ascend chips. The country aims to become the first in the region to activate a sovereign, full-stack artificial intelligence ecosystem.

The US-China tech war escalated when the Trump administration banned Huawei AI chips worldwide. According to foreign authorities, anyone using the Ascend 910 series will require a special license, or else they will face consequences.

Despite these stricter US curbs, Malaysia has announced plans to build the first full-stack AI infrastructure powered by Huawei Ascend chips and DeepSeek LLMs.

Teo Nie Ching, the Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Communications, said that it’s a significant step in the country’s AI growth as DeepSeek large language models and hosting servers can enhance AI and safeguard user privacy and data security.

Inputs suggest that Malaysia will be the first country to deploy Huawei AI chips for its advanced project. The news has come up when the US is aiming to restrict the use of Huawei Ascend processors in every corner of the world.

According to the report, the AlterMatic DT250 AI server, equipped with eight Ascend GPUs, will power up the first sovereign generative AI infrastructure.

That’s not it! Skyvast – familiar for developing AI-ready data centers and managing high-performance AI servers, will lead this development. It aims to deploy 3000 GPUs of Huawei’s AI solution in multiple infrastructure zones by 2026.

A Huawei spokesperson contradicted the statement, saying that no Ascend chips had been sold to Malaysia yet. Hence, the accuracy of the report seems doubtful.

Comcluding the matter, Nie Ching said:

“So this is the first of the kind outside China, we are very proud, meaning that in terms of AI adoption and AI application, Malaysia indeed truly will be the leader in ASEAN, in terms of AI application and adoption.”
