Huawei’s rise in smart driving tech reportedly sparks new competition

Huawei has gained a significant foothold in the smart driving tech segment, which has shaken the competition among some other tech vendors. A new report highlights how the phone maker is expanding its driving solution business in China.
Bloomberg noted that Huawei has ‘cemented a dominant position’ in the Chinese smart car driving tech competition. The company does not make cars but has evolved in the respective business by offering advanced driving solutions.
In recent times, Huawei has unveiled various innovative driving techs. Last year, the company debuted the Qiankun Driving Solution series, providing some extraordinary capabilities to its automobile partners to make driving more convenient.
These steps turned Huawei’s self-driving tech business profitable in 2024. The company even collaborated with many carmaking firms and seeded its smart car solutions, like ADS 3.0 and HarmonyOS cockpit, to SUVs ranging from BYD to BMW.
Tu Le, the Founder of Sino Auto Insights, says:
“Huawei’s background in hardware and software definitely shows. People I trust tell me it’s one of the best systems in China. Their aggressiveness points to how important being a player in the space is for them.”
Huawei is still facing heavy competition from tech vendors like Xiaomi, which unveiled a dynamic electric vehicle last month. On the flip side, the company’s control over its smart driving ecosystem limits its ability to tie up with global customers.

US authorities have already restricted the OEM from selling or purchasing any US-based high-end products. Meanwhile, they see autonomous driving software as a major step to access or exploit data in real time from public roads.
Tu adds that Huawei can continue to be a leader in the self-driving segment as long as it continues to improve its solution. But the question is whether it will be able to convince a foreign automobile maker to use its system outside China.
Huawei now aims for 1 million unit shipments across more than a dozen car models in 2025. It is also teaming up with firms like BMW for HarmonyOS app ecosystem.
On April 22, Huawei unveiled dynamic and next-gen smart car driving solutions. For instance, ADS 4.0, HarmonyOS Cockpit 5, HarmonyOS Space, and more.
It will be interesting to see how this year pans out for Huawei’s smart automotive solutions business.
