Huawei knocked out Apple iPhone in the 2024 Chinese phone sales market. It seems the US tech giant is unable to make its mark in its second-largest market. Meanwhile, the Mate 70 phone maker continues to grow amid hardships and challenges.

A recent report by Canalys shed light on the last year’s Chinese phone showdown. While many brands scored new heights in sales, Apple dipped in the market.

Reason? Fierce competition from Huawei and other Chinese opponents. For instance, Vivo ranked first in the 2024 full-year Chinese smartphone sales market.

The first runner-up is Huawei. It remained in hype last year for its powerful premium phone launches. The list counts Pura 70 Ultra, tri-fold, and Mate 70 series.

2024 was the first year of Huawei getting back on the smartphone track after the US sanctions. Since 2019, the OEM has been struggling with Kirin chip production following ‘unnecessary’ trade regulations over the US’s national security concerns.

Gladly, Huawei achieved good scores in the 2024 Chinese market. It shipped 46 million devices last year and held a market share of 16% with a 37% YoY growth rate.

However, Apple faced the ‘largest-ever’ iPhone sales decline in the 2024 Chinese market. It has seen a fall-down in all four quarters and dropped by 25% in the fourth quarter last year. It ranked third in the full-year smartphone sales battle.

Where did Apple lag?

Last year, the iPhone maker tried every possible effort to chase customers in China. The company offered massive discounts on the newly released iPhone 16 series and opened various new offerings during the promotion event.

Although three factors that mainly affected iPhone sales in China are: AI-less devices, the absence of innovation, and high prices. While Chinese brands like Huawei, Honor, and Vivo are prioritizing AI in their devices, Apple introduced the iPhone 16 series without artificial intelligence, disappointing consumers.

Innovation is another segment where Apple lags. The company has been using its signature design for ages and hasn’t made any major upgrades to it. A foldable phone is also missing from the company’s side, though it may launch this year.

Without any significant upgrades, Apple has tagged its iPhone with super high prices. Even though iPhones have some of the best customization features, they lack a few key segments like design and intelligence as per Chinese consumers.

Customers support native brands

Speaking of Chinese customers, the country has now started choosing native brands over foreign ones. The aim is to boost China’s economy and strength against US.

Apple did well in the Q4 2024 Chinese smartphone market and achieved first rank with the highest shipments. It also remains unbeatable in the global market. But when it comes to China, Huawei constant growth is slowing down Apple iPhone sales in the Chinese smartphone market.
