Huawei smartwatch update

Huawei is currently rolling out a major software update for the global smartwatches, simultaneously, the company is also spotted releasing security patches for the users.

What’s new? A firmware update for a smartwatch is just a usual upgrade procedure to keep it ready with optimum performance. However, this time it’s different because, for the first time, Huawei mentioned “security patch” details in the changelog.

According to the details, HarmonyOS 3 is making its way to Watch 3 and Watch GT 3 smartwatches. The latest version has various new additions such as new watch faces, system optimizations, data synchronization, and more.

One of these changes includes a kaleidoscopic watch face, which reacts to the smartwatch’s rotating crown.

After HarmonyOS 3:

Recently, Huawei Watch 3 users received the first OTA update after HarmonyOS 3 installation. This is a monthly upgrade. However, this time the changelog clearly mentioned integrating February 2023 HarmonyOS security patches to the smartwatch.

I was a bit surprised by the fact that I’d never seen this before. Especially not in the changelog. So far, Huawei only sent security updates for smartphones. However, this development in smartwatch security is something entirely new.

To be mentioned, Huawei separately releases security patches for smartwatches in the monthly bulletin. As it seems like the company is just informing users that their smartwatch is now secured more than ever.

Old smartwatch?

Yes, the old wearables such as Watch GT 2 and the rest of the series have not received a HarmonyOS upgrade. But, Huawei keeps on sending occasional software updates for these important smartwatches.

Still, some of the users of the Huawei Watch 3, Watch GT 3 series, and Watch Runner in different countries are waiting for a new update. It may take some time due to the gradual rollout process. However, you still have the option to do a manual check via the Huawei Health app.
