Huawei has recently applied for a new patent with technology that reveals that future smartwatches may come with wireless networking using satellite connectivity. This is an advanced addition to the smart wearable.

According to the details, Huawei applied new technology patent with application number CN116015392A on October 22, 2021. While it was published on April 25, 2023. The patent is titled “Wearable device, Beidou short message transmission method and related products”.

Tech description:

It is shown that this patent has a wearable device, including an antenna radiator, a Beidou communication module, and a processor.

The Beidou communication module consists of a satellite positioning unit and a short message unit. The satellite positioning unit is combined with the control of the processor, to obtain global position positioning information through the antenna radiator.

Meanwhile, the short message unit is used to multiplex the antenna radiator to send and receive Beidou short messages under the control of the processor.

In Action:

The patent shows a feature for sending a Beidou short message via a wearable device. It includes a processor of the smartwatch, which receives an input signal and/or decides that the current environment meets the trigger of a message in certain conditions.

That’s how it can utilize the Beidou satellite communication module to send short messages through the antenna radiator. The technology enables wearable devices to communicate through Beidou satellites in a network-less environment. This will allow you to establish communication in emergency situations.

Huawei already introduced the satellite SMS technology with Watch Ultimate but the latest test patent is about wireless networking using satellite connectivity is something new for smartwatches.

Watch Ultimate

This is the world’s first mass smartwatch that supports two-way Beidou satellite messages. In the case of no ground network, Watch Ultimate can independently send satellite-powered messages to a mobile device.

The recipient can receive Beidou satellite SMS through the Huawei Meetime app or a short message. It will have the option to reply to the Huawei Watch Ultimate through the MeeTime app or the URL link in the short message according to the preset message
