Huawei, SAIC inked agreements to develop EV and battery plants

Huawei and SAIC have jointly developed the Shangjie smart car brand, and now both parties are putting in more efforts to expand this new project via EV and battery plants. These plants will open a new production base for SAIC in China.

Both SAIC and Huawei have been working for months on a new EV brand called Shangjie. The companies even announced the new brand at the Auto Shanghai 2025. Now, both parties aim to boost the production of Shangjie smart cars.

According to the reports, Huawei and SAIC are now penning agreements with the Lingang New Area to create a new line of energy vehicles (EV) and battery plants to power them.

The aim of this agreement with the Lingang in Shanghai’s free trade zone is to build the “Shangjie High-end Intelligent New Energy Vehicle Production Base”.

On the flip side, it has joined hands with CATL. Also called Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.Ltd, is a Chinese battery manufacturer and tech firm, specialized in lithium-ion batteries for EVs, energy storage systems, and more.

In the SAIC and CATL agreement, the former holds a 51% stake, while the rest belongs to CATL. Both firms will focus on developing a new battery system and component factory in the Lingang New Area for the Shangjie production base.

Huawei and SAIC-developed smart car brand will focus on mid-to-high-end smart EVs. The first two automobiles of this brand will likely land on the market this fall.
