Huawei reportedly tagging smartwatches as medical devices

A new report mentioned that Huawei is tagging its smartwatches as medical devices to increase its wrist wearable sales. The Chinese tech giant is taking the support of medical-grade tags to grab more consumer attention for its products.
Huawei wearables are full of interesting capabilities. But apart from effective features, the company is using a special hack to boost its smartwatch sales in the market.
One of these is the Watch D2, launched in November last year in China. The company has certified the device with a Class II medical device registration. Being a medical device, the respective wearable brings a few special benefits for consumers.
Some Chinese buyers noted that due to the ‘medical-grade’ tag, they can directly purchase Watch D2 via their medical insurance instead of paying for it separately.
Consumers can use the money available in their medical insurance accounts to buy the Huawei Watch D2. This news immediately caught the attention and spread like wildfire on social media platforms. Many Watch D2 units in Chinese pharmacies are sold out, while in some places, users are waiting for the arrival of new units.
A Chinese pharmacy staff said that due to supply and demand, the queue for appointments at some pharmacies takes about 20 days. The person added that each consumer is limited to one unit and required to activate the device on the site.
“The watches are currently not available. Buyers need an appointment. There are more than 500 people in the queue.” – says a Shanghai pharmacy.
Many netizens dropped tips on how others can benefit from the wearable’s medical device tag and use the money from their medical insurance in full or part. Buyers can use their accounts as a discount coupon to purchase the device.
Chinese Medical Insurance Policy
95% of China’s population gets a certain amount of money each month in the medical insurance scheme. Individuals can use this money to clear out medication bills or buy medical devices like blood pressure monitors, and more. Apart from medication, one can’t use this money for any other purposes.
As reported by Bloomberg, registering Huawei Watch D2 smartwatches as medical devices eventually helped the company boost its wearable sales in China.

Huawei Watch D2 offers medical-grade features and service to users, thanks to the TruSense System. The ultimate tech meets medical standards and delivers accurate health reports faster than ever, ensuring a convenient experience.
Since Apple Watches aren’t tagged as a medical wearable in China, Huawei has more chances to gain popularity for its special wrist gadgets in the wearable field.
Some people asked whether selling a multi-feature device as a medical one is appropriate. In that case, many companies can misuse the ‘medical’ label for their products.
The Health Insurance Bureau in China has currently prohibited the purchase of such devices. It may soon take certain action on this matter in the coming days.
