Huawei reportedly revamps AI chip yield to help China meet tech goals

Huawei is reportedly enhancing its AI chip yield to help China fulfill its tech dreams. The company’s efforts will eventually support the country in developing slightly advanced processors regardless of geopolitical tensions and US restrictions.
FinancialTimes noted that Huawei has increased the yield of its AI Ascend chip to support the tech industry in China. It has raised the percentage of functional production of its latest AI chips to 40%, double the figure from last year (20%).
The Ascend 910C is Huawei’s latest AI processor. The chipset is a far better version of the 910B. As per details, the OEM has increased the production of this new chip.
Improved production suggests that Huawei’s AI chip yield has become profitable. Some people said it was the first time the company’s production line for Ascend chips improved and showed positive results. It further hints at China’s hope to develop a reliable computing infrastructure for the AI industry.
After 40%, the Chinese tech maker aims to boost the AI chip yield to 60% by complying with the industry standards for similar processors. Despite US sanctions, Huawei is making efforts to increase chip production and meet consumer demands.
China Support
Huawei has the full support of the Chinese government. Beijing is constantly instructing native tech companies to purchase Huawei AI Ascend chips over Nvidia.
Austin Lyons – a semiconductor analyst at Consultancy Creative Strategies said that Huawei would be capable of working commercially at a 40% chip yield.
SMIC is currently helping Huawei to tackle the chip yield challenges. It does not have access to EUV tech and hence, uses the N+2 process to produce processors. The Chinese OEMs are putting efforts to make better chips with their self-made techs.
Recently, Ren Zengfei – the Founder of Huawei Technologies informed Xi Jinping – the Chinese President that the “lack of core and soul” is under control. Perhaps, things will soon improve significantly in the Chinese tech industry.
