Huawei Ascend AI Chip

U.S. is planning to cut down Nvidia H20 supply for China, creating a major void, but it looks like Huawei has a ‘plan B’ in this case in the form of a new-gen Ascend 920 AI chip. A new report has shared insights on Huawei’s latest chip creation.

Huawei has reportedly developed a new-gen Ascend 920 AI chip as a logical alternative to Nvidia H20. While the U.S. is planning to increase its trade export restrictions for China, the tech giant is seeking new ways to firm its leg in the AI field.

Nvidia is seemingly losing ground in the Chinese AI market, and Huawei is taking advantage of this situation. Nvidia’s H20 chipset has been in high demand by some big Chinese clients like ByteDance, Tencent, and more.

H20 was even ordered in thousands of units this year in China. Although the latest U.S. rules prohibit Nvidia from selling this chip to Chinese customers. Huawei came out with a solution that could boost the company and the country’s AI growth.

The new AI processor is a complete “in-house” creation. Report says it uses a 6nm process technology by SMIC and has a similar chiplet design to the Ascend 910C.

Huawei’s new Ascend 920 SoC can feature 900 TFLOPS and 4000 GB/s memory bandwidth. Inputs add that the new chip is 30-40% faster than the previous-generation AI processors, and can perform better than the Nvidia H20 semiconductor.

The real-life testing and performance of the new-gen Ascend 920 AI chip is still underway. Although the latest chipset development hints that Huawei is not missing any point to challenge Nvidia in one of its biggest AI chip markets.

A recent report says that Huawei’s new CloudMatrix 384 AI Supernode tech catches up with Nvidia in computing power and can reduce the blockage in this particular aspect for AI data centers. It would be worth seeing how the Chinese OEM takes over Nvidia in China in the future.
