Huawei Pangu Meteorological large scale model added precipitation prediction feature

Today, Huawei Cloud officially announced the addition of a new precipitation prediction feature in the Pangu large Meteorological weather model. Huawei also shared a global invitation to test this new large model and its latest features.

According to the information, the new precipitation feature enables the Pangu model to learn and predict short-term and medium-term precipitation predictions for the next 6 to 24 hours. It also shows danger warnings of heavy rain and forecast for the upcoming 3 to 24-hour forecast.

In meteorology, precipitation is any product of the condensation of atmospheric water vapor that falls from clouds due to gravitational pull. The main forms of precipitation include drizzle, rain, sleet, snow, ice pellets, graupel, and hail.

Pangu is a large-scale language learning model, designed and developed by Huawei and it is operated under the Huawei Cloud subsidiary. However, Pangu itself is distributed for various use cases including Meteorological studies and science.

Huawei officials revealed that the Pangu Meteorological Model is based on 40 years of global meteorological data, adds 10 years of satellite precipitation data, and uses 3D EST-3 Earth Space Network training and optimization.

Thailand’s Meteorological Administration announced that it will work with Huawei to integrate the new meteorological model into its system.

In July this year, Huawei unveiled the Pangu large-scale meteorological model on the official website of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The addition of a new precipitation feature in the Huawei Pangu Meteorological model will help to explore more data.
