Huawei Technologies, the world’s largest supplier of telecom equipment and the second-biggest smartphone maker, its technology touches virtually every corner of the world, and its massive R&D budget has made it a leader in 5G technology.

Recently, the company has shipped more smartphones than ever before. The company is now on track to become the world’s second-largest smartphone maker with more than 200 million units shipped already in 2018, beating Apple for a full year for the first time, despite a US government crackdown and increasing scrutiny from other national governments, via Nikkei Asian Review.

The company said its record-breaking shipments were largely fuelled by the demand for its Huawei P20, Honor 10 and Mate 20 smartphones.

Behind Samsung Electronics’ 21.6% Huawei controlled 10.4% of the global smartphone market in 2017, then Apple’s 14.7%, according to the IDC.

Importantly, Huawei achieved second place behind Samsung for the first time in the second quarter and kept its place ahead of Apple in the third quarter as well.

Huawei has greatly increased sales in China, Europe, and Africa this year, and has already achieved a more than 30% jump in global unit sales from the 153 million sold in 2017. Apple shipped 215.8 million units in 2017. Worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to fall for the second year in 2018.

Huawei’s head of consumer business has said it’s possible Huawei becomes the world’s top smartphone maker by the end of next year, pointing to strong growth in Europe and China.
