Huawei may upgrade satellite communication tech to elevate call experience

Huawei is the champion when we talk about satellite communication, and it looks like the company is preparing major changes for this tech to boost the voice call experience. A new input reveals the OEM’s plans for the next-gen satellite tech.

Weibo tipster @ExperienceMore says that Huawei is working on the low-orbit satellite communication technology to enhance the call experience. The company is exploring new capabilities that can deliver improved satellite features than ever.

Low-orbit satellite communication enables smartphones to directly connect with satellites. It makes data transmission and voice calls simpler and more convenient.

The tipster adds that the new low-orbit satellite communication tech can be linked with 6G networks. As a result, smartphones, automobiles, and other devices can obtain a strong network connection in areas without proper network coverage.

Earlier, Huawei used high-orbit satellite communication (for Mate 60 Pro), which caused some issues in terms of app performance and services. This time, the OEM is seemingly planning to use low-orbit + 6G ‘air-ground’ integration with benefits like low latency and high-coverage density.

Inputs further reveal that Huawei is working with China Star Network to upgrade the satellite communication tech to low-orbit Internet. The Chinese firm has started testing the new technology internally and may initiate the public testing in H2 2025.

Huawei continues to lead in satellite communication

The Chinese OEM was the first to launch satellite communication with the Mate 50 series. At that time, the tech supported only sending messages without any replies.

Although Huawei upgraded the tech with the P60 series and introduced a two-way communication where users can send and receive satellite SMS(s). Surprisingly, Mate 60 Pro became the star of this show with the first phone featuring satellite calling.

With the Pura 70 series, the company introduced image-sending capability in satellite communication. China now aims to set 3900 low-orbit satellites by 2027, and increase it to 6000 by 2030. It seemingly targets SpaceX’s goals for this year.

If Huawei makes a move in this scenario, it will continue to lead the satellite communication race.
