Huawei crowned Chinese smartphone sales in January 2025, Vivo ranked second

Counterpoint has released new report on the Chinese smartphone sales market for January 2025 and Huawei has ranked first. Alongside the Mate phone maker, Vivo and Xiaomi made their space in the top three smartphone makers of the ranking.
The Chinese smartphone market sold around 29 million units in January 2025. This figure eventually increased the overall sales by 17.6% YoY. Meanwhile, the sales hiked to 65% YoY from January 20 to 26, reaching 9.5 million units.
Inputs reveal that Huawei, Vivo, and Xiaomi together scored 54% of the total Chinese smartphone sales in January 2025. Huawei sits on the top with the most smartphone sales, while Vivo ranked second. Xiaomi closely followed at the third spot.
Regarding the price category, the mid-to-high-range phone market (2000 to 5000 yuan) saw a more significant rise in sales compared to other categories. A major credit behind these surges goes to Chinese government subsidies.
As per the report, Chinese smartphone sales mainly rose in the last week following a government norm. The authorities kicked off a new scheme on January 20 under which consumers purchasing devices (phones, tablets, watches) below 6000 yuan will get a subsidy of 15% (500 yuan per purchase).
This step ultimately boosted the overall sales of the Chinese smartphone market by 65% after January 20. It’s just the beginning, and the smartphone market will likely get 2-3% more sales by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
Counterpoint notes that the “short periods sales boom” may drastically affect later as the subsidy ends. Although Huawei seems already prepared for this point with a “new form factor” smartphone.
Yu Chengdong – the Chairman of Huawei Consumer Business announced to release the most incredible product this month. Perhaps, this the company’s strategy to remain firm in the ups and downs of the Chinese smartphone market.
