Huawei allegedly reshuffles top executive to increase focus on smartphones

Huawei is allegedly reshuffling the top executive – Richard Yu’s, position in the company to increase focus on the smartphones business. The firm has not mentioned reasons behind this shift, though some insiders gave info on this matter.

Richard Yu has been serving as the Executive Director, Chairman of the Consumer BG, and Chairman of the Smart Automotive Solutions BG at Huawei.

Last year in May, Yu stepped down as the CEO of Huawei Consumer and Smart Automotive Business and was promoted to the Chairman for both sectors. Huawei took such a step as it never had a Chairman for its Device Business.

Now, the top executive allegedly resigned from the Huawei Smart Driving BG to focus primarily on smartphones. Richard’s official Weibo page now only shows two of his positions in the company: Executive Director and Chairman of Consumer BG.

The ‘Chairman of Intelligent Automotive Solutions BU’ no longer exists on the intro section of Richard Yu’s Weibo page. Although people familiar with the matter said that Yu Chengdong will still indirectly oversee the respective business.

Inputs further reveal that the company has made these changes to enable Richard Yu focus better on the smartphone and HarmonyOS smart driving segment.

Huawei also updated the new position details on its official executives site which shows only two main designations: Executive Director, Chairman of the Board of Direcyors of the Consumer BG.

Over time, Huawei has partnered with many automobile producers, which has converted its sole-owned Smart Automotive Driving Business, NewCool, to a joint venture.

Huawei has also changed the main representative of NewCool (one of its new smart automotive business units in Shenzhen) to Xu Zhijun.

This could be a major reason why Huawei has made adjustments in its top executive’s positions. How this new change will impact the smartphone and smart automotive solution business of the company would be worth looking at.
