Honor indirectly comments on Huawei Pura 80 Ultra’s dual periscope camera

Over a couple of years, Huawei introduced many high-end camera devices in the market, but the Pura 80 Ultra’s dual periscope lens is something that even rivals like Honor can’t keep their eyes off. Here’s a new remark on the latest camera technology.
Luo Wei, the Chief Imaging Engineer of Honor, has shared a new post on Weibo, revealing his personal opinion on the “imaging flagships of friendly companies.”
The executive started the explanation from the high-dynamic LOFIC-based main camera technology. Magic 6 was the first in the Honor family to use a LOFIC camera with the OmniVision 50K camera.
But the chief mentioned that the tech requires efforts to resolve power consumption and dark noise problems. Coming to the telephoto segment, Luo Wei said:
“Telephoto, let me be frank. If it were me, I would not choose it. The reason is that the focal length is actually 3.7x – 4.7x, and only the middle 1/4 of the sensor can be used at the telephoto length. No image can be formed when switching focal lengths.”
As per Luo, the motor responsible for the switchable mechanism should be piezoelectric – a step that involves electric polarization from the application of mechanical stress.
Luo believes that a step is missing in the latest camera tech as a result of which, even switching the prism won’t generate the image.

Honor Imaging Technology’s chief says it’s more like a flaw than a tech-pack product. It is not comparable to the real continuous zoom or even the switching experience of dual telephoto. The mechanical structure is showy but has no practical use.
The executive predicted that the next-gen smartphones will abandon such type of camera technologies. Apart from the telephoto framework, the chief applauded the assisted composition and color palette technology.
Luo Wei didn’t reveal the name of any device in the post. But words like color palette, switching prism, and 3.7x optical zoom suggest that the Honor executive has been indirectly pointing out the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra’s dual periscope camera.
Huawei Central’s Take
Pura 80 Ultra took the periscope camera technology to the next level. Being an advanced smartphone tech, it is expected to have both merits and demerits. But the device’s performance score depends on how it performs in real-life scenarios.
