Hongmeng OS to capture 2% share of the global operating system market by 2020: Report

Officially announced at Huawei Developer Conference 2019, Hongmeng OS/HarmonyOS is a new microkernel-based, distributed operating system designed to deliver a new user experience across all devices and scenarios.

The data posted by Statscounter, as of September 2019, Android is the current top player in the global operating system market with 40.44% share, second comes Windows with 35.32%, the third iOS with 14.29%, OS X with 6.4%, Linux with 1.59% shares and others stands with 1.59%.

Industry analysts estimated that the HarmonyOS in the Chinese market will reach 0.1% by the end of this year expanding to 5% by the end of 2020. While this dominance in the Chinese market will help the OS to capture 2% of the global OS market share and surpassing Linux for fifth place.

HarmonyOS is first used in Honor/Huawei Vision TV series and will be used in Smartwatches, In-vehicle systems, and Smart speakers. This OS is also planned to be expanded for more platforms.

HarmonyOS version 1.0 is primarily based for Smart Screen and will come with beta integrated development environment (IDE) for early developers. Although there could be more than just the support for TVs.

Version 2.0 coming next year with enhanced performance, more features for IDE and addition of more platforms such as Cars domestic level (Chinese), PC, Smartwatches and other wearables such as fitness bands. Version 3.0 will be released in 2021 and focused to improve hardware and software collaboration with the OS.

According to Yu Chengdong, Huawei’s Consumers Business Group CEO, the company will continue to make changes in the Hongmeng OS to make it more advance as time passes.
