European Parliament is connecting Huawei with alleged bribery

European parliament has suspended multiple Huawei representatives from premises following a bribery investigation. The case came into highlight amid the increasing U.S. restrictions and states the bribe will eventually benefit the Chinese company.

On Thursday, Belgian prosecutors investigated 21 premises in Belgium and Portugal. They believe that the corruption has been in action very carefully since 2021.

Huawei senators were allegedly giving bribes for taking political positions or excessive gifts such as food and travel expenses or regular invitations for sports matches. It has unexpectedly benefitted Huawei, says Belgian prosecutors.

When Huawei was asked about how it is seeing the bribery situation on its representatives in the European Parliament, the company said that it is taking the blame seriously and will communicate with authorities over this matter.

A Huawei spokesperson said:

“Huawei has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption or other wrongdoing, and we are committed to complying with all applicable laws and regulations at all times.”

Under this bribery investigation, many Huawei lobbyists were restricted from entering the European Parliament. The parliament called it a precautionary measure.

“On March 14, the parliament decided, as a precautionary measure, to suspend the access to parliament of representatives attached to the Huawei company with immediate effect.” – said a spokesperson to Politico.

The investigators even requested the European Parliament to assist the probe and comply with it.
