Eight people charged with corruption in alleged Huawei bribery case

A new report reveals that eight people have been charged with corruption in the alleged Huawei bribery case. The matter came to light last month when the European Parliament restricted Huawei representatives from entering its premises.

Now, the case has taken a new turn. After investigating five people in the alleged Huawei bribery matter, Belgium has charged three more people (a total of eight) with corruption, money laundering, and taking part in a criminal organization.

On Friday, a Belgium public prosecutor said it had probed and indicted eight people in the suspected bribery matter at the European Parliament.

Inputs further reveal that three of the eight people are under electronic surveillance; two of them are free, while the others are still under arrest.

The investigation of this suspected Huawei bribery case is still ongoing. As per previous info, Huawei senators were reportedly giving bribes to MEPs (Members of European Parliament) to take political positions that can benefit the Chinese firm.

However, the tech giant denied such accusations, saying that it has a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption or other wrongdoings. Investigators further raided 21 premises across Belgium and Portugal.

According to Belgian prosecutors, the alleged corruption has been secretly happening since 2021. Huawei said that it takes all these allegations seriously and communicates with authorities to understand the situation before reaching conclusions.

On the other hand, Belgian investigators asked the European Parliament to assist with the ongoing probe and comply with the rules until the matter resolves.

European Parliament even suspended many Huawei senators from entering the parliament as a precautionary measure. It is unclear what turns this situation will take in the time ahead.
