Competition intensifies between Samsung and TSMC to conquer 2nm chip technology

Samsung and TSMC are aiming to achieve the next chipset processing technology at 2nm (nanometer) and Samsung is looking to hold this achievement first with new progress.

According to the Korean media – Plusenews, Samsung is planning to begin production of 2nm chips by 2025. Not only that the company is looking to shift to 1.4nm by 2027. It’s revealed that Samsung is also working on the second generation 3nm chip with improvements made in the first gen design.

Taiwan’s TSMC is moving in the same direction to gain momentum in 2nm chip production with additional chip plants. The largest chip producer is planning to put 2nm chip production in effect by 2025. Initially, TSMC looking to produce 30,000 wafters as of the Q4 of 2025.

Both TSMC and Samsung are working on the next generation of processing technologies to conduct a rapid production of 2nm chipsets in early 2025.

The report also suggests that TSMC is facing some challenges with GAA (Gate-All-Around), a next-generation technology with a higher efficiency of electricity usage compared to the conventional FinFET process.

But Samsung has acquired success in GAA tech for its 3nm manufacturing and the estimated yield rate is over 60 percent. This might give an edge to Samsung in terms of efficiency and time-saving. However, TSMC is yet to announce its position on this matter.
