Breaking: Some suppliers gets US approval to resume sales to Huawei, more to come

Earlier this week, the US government announced a new 90-day reprieve to Huawei and now some suppliers also got approval to resume sales to Huawei, which was a long-awaited decision made by the US, says a report.

Back in May, the US Commerce Department added Huawei into the Entity-List and imposed trade restrictions that prohibit it from buying US technologies.

According to Reuters, the Commerce Department said it has begun issuing licenses for some companies to sell goods to Huawei. However, it was not immediately confirmed which products have been approved for sale to the Chinese tech giant.

Above all, the most important license Huawei awaits is for Google’s mobile services, which it needs to install on new smartphones.

A U.S. official said of roughly 300 license requests, about half have been processed. Roughly half of those – or one-quarter of the total – have been approved and the rest have been denied.

A different source confirms that some licenses for sales of cell phone components and non-electronic components were approved.

“The Department is issuing these narrow licenses to authorize limited and specific activities which do not pose a significant risk to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States,” the Commerce Department said in a statement, without providing further detail.

This new news came after the US Commerce announced an extension to Huawei’s temporary business license, serving its existing US rural network operators and smartphone owners.

For now, this is quite a big development in this story and we can expect that Huawei will also get a license for the use of Google’s software services in its devices.
