Android 16 Samsung APV codec

Google has rolled out the first beta of Android 16 and looks like the new version supports Samsung APV codec. This implementation enhances video creation and ensures better results. The new OS will likely unlock the best videography experience.

APV refers to Advanced Professional Video codec. It brings pro-level and high-quality video editing properties. It offers a more convenient and smart video creation experience to users, consuming 20% less storage than existing formats.

Samsung introduced its APV codec in October 2023. As of now, Android 16 Beta 1 shows support for Samsung APV codec to boost the videography experience for users.

The respective video codec in Android 16 targets lossless video quality. It also supports several chroma sampling formats, multi-view video and auxiliary clips, HDR10/10+, user-defined metadata, and many other traits to make your videos stunning.

Inputs reveal that Android 16 will support APV 422-10 Profile that is capable of YUV422 color sampling, 10-bit encoding, and other video-related characteristics.

Google further mentioned that APV codec provides excellent video quality in all aspects. Some key features of the Android 16 APV video codec are as follows:

  • Perceptually lossless video quality (close to raw video quality).
  • Low complexity and high throughput intra-frame-only coding (without pixel domain prediction) to better support editing workflows.
  • Support for a high bit-rate range up to a few Gbps for 2K, 4K, and 8K resolution content, enabled by a lightweight entropy coding scheme.
  • Frame tiling for immersive content and for enabling parallel encoding and decoding.
  • Support for various chroma sampling formats and bit-depths.
  • Support for multiple decoding and re-encoding without severe visual quality degradation.
  • Support multi-view video and auxiliary video like depth, alpha, and preview.
  • Support for HDR10/10+ and user-defined metadata

Hence, we can expect better videography and video editing skills with the new Android 16 as well as the Samsung One UI 8.0 upgrade.
