Android 16 may resolve the annoying app resizing issue for tablets and folding phones. Google has shared new insights on how the upcoming software will change the application interface for all types of devices, without degrading the quality.

The US tech giant is working on “app adaptivity”. Under this segment, Android 16 will enable applications to freely adapt to all screen sizes, without any visual fault.

Google is exploring ways that can make app orientation (resizing) flexible for tablets and foldable phones with Android 16. Most applications rely on a single orientation. Under such a rule, the app appears pretty good on phones but interrupts the user experience on large-screen devices, ruining the user experience.

With the new software upgrade, the US firm will eliminate certain restrictions due to which developers have to lock their applications in a particular screen size.

Simply put, Android developers will be able to design applications that can easily adapt to different screen sizes without resulting in black bars or an ugly look.

Google says:

“…. Android 16 is removing the ability for apps to restrict orientation and resizability at the platform level, and shifting to a consistent model of adaptive apps.”

This simple change will help in meeting users’ expectations as well as improve the app accessibility. Google is further helping developers with certain tools (Espresso and Jetpack Compose testing APIs) to easily develop resizable applications for large-screen models.

Hereafter, optimized applications will offer seamless functioning in portrait as well as landscape orientation. Apart from the 16th build, Android 17 will bring new enhancements to this subject in 2026. The company explained the necessary adjustments:

  • Android 16 (2025): Changes described above will be the baseline experience for large screen devices (smallest screen width > 600dp) for apps that target API level 36, with the option for developers to opt out.
  • Android release in 2026: Changes described above will be the baseline experience for large screen devices (smallest screen width >600dp) for apps that target API level 37. Developers will not have the option to opt out.
