Android 16 set to launch as early as June, confirms Google

Android 16 is on the way to surprise its users with a “sooner-than-expected” launch in June this year, says Google. The company has recently confirmed that the upcoming major Android software version is on track to hit an early release timeline.
Google talked about the next Android version with Android Police at MWC 2025. One of the company’s senior officials mentioned the launch time of Android 16.
Sameer Samat, the President of Google Android Ecosystem said that Android 16 is on track for its June launch. The company has speed up the development of the next major upgrade and aims to introduce it by the end of the first half of this year.
The Android Ecosystem President said:
“So far, so good. I’ve never had a release where at this point the bug count was where I wanted it to be, but the team is working hard, and we’re excited about getting it here.”
Google has mostly released a new Android version in August or later. But this time, the OEM is rushing for an early launch and constantly dropping new betas for users.
Why an early release?
The Pixel phone maker has made development amendments to the Android team. It has initiated a “Trunk Stable” development for the upcoming Android build.
Sameer describes that Trunk Stable development reflects that those working on Android are eventually contributing to the same brand of code. Thus, the team can develop the entire operating system more often than taking months.
Trunk Stable
As per the official, the Trunk Stable technique is far better than previous methods. It doesn’t require working on different branches, and then merging them all at the end, which takes a lot of time to look out for problems and other challenges.
Google executive further mentioned that earlier release schedule used to delay as the team follows up the merger in June. Hereafter, the task runs from June to later in the year, resolving related issues. The company mainly tried to fix the internal challenge of getting the release out earlier this time. Sameer added:
“This year, we will do more to highlight what is in the release. We know we have many fans around the world who want to understand more of the depth of it. There are also a lot of users that want functionality faster, and they want us to update more regularly. We have been modularizing and componentizing Android so we can do that.”
