Android 16 can prevent USB data hacking via new security feature

Google is now pouring efforts to prevent hacking of USB data via a useful Android 16 security feature. The company is working on an additional tool that will disable the USB data access whenever the phone is locked to boost the security aspect.

Often, Android phone users charge their devices via free charging stations in public spaces, where devices can be plugged into USB ports for charging.

But such stations always present a security risk called juice jacking, where malicious hands might use certain modified USB ports or cables to install malware on your device and easily steal data from the connected handset.

Good news is that Android 16 may bring such a USB security feature that will shield your device even when connected to a public charging station. As of now, users will be able to disable the USB data access at points where they can sense risk.

Spotted by Android Authority, Advanced Protection Mode in Android 16 will automatically turn off USB data signaling for a locked device, without manual efforts.

Don’t worry, as the charging will continue to work, but tools like keyboard, flash drives, etc, won’t function until the user unlocks the phone. Ironically, a few security experts call this feature a USB condom.

Moreover, a notification will hit your device on detecting some “suspicious USB activity” if a device attempts to connect when your smartphone is in lock state.

The feature will further disable sideloading of apps, 2G connectivity, MTE (Memory Tagging Extension) for apps, and public Wi-Fi. These things will remain away from your device until the USB locking protection feature is working.
