Android 16 bringing screen-off fingerprint unlock to older devices

Android 16 Beta 3 is allowing some old Pixel device owners to use the screen-off fingerprint unlock feature. The smart capability was confined to the Pixel 9 series to date. But Google has finally expanded it to more devices for a better experience.
Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock is a significant feature that keeps the scanner active even when the screen is off. Users can easily press the fingerprint scanner area (when the screen is off) and your Pixel smartphone will wake up immediately.
The feature debuted with Android 16 Developer Preview 2 for Pixel 9 series. Many users believed the feature could be exclusive to the flagship line as they integrate ultrasonic fingerprint sensors that work without passing light through the display.
But Google is bringing this offering to old Pixel devices as well. As noted by Android Authority, Android 16 Beta 3 is expanding the Screen-Off Fingerprint Unlock tool to older Pixel phones. Just turn on the feature and experience a faster and easier unlocking than ever.
One can turn on the feature by following these steps:
- Go to the Settings app
- Select the Security & Privacy section
- Tap on Device Unlock> Face & Fingerprint Unlock
- Click on Fingerprint Unlock.
- In the ‘When using Fingerprint Unlock’ section, hit the toggle for the Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock.

Note that such a feature is already available for many Samsung and Xiaomi phones. Google is now taking this step to enhance the Pixel’s unlocking experience.
Since the feature has been spotted in a beta version, it will initially be open for beta testers. Non-beta device holders can enable the AOD feature to experience a similar capability, for now at least.
