After 128KB, HarmonyOS now targets 64KB memory devices
Huawei has announced that it’s targeting 64KB as the next memory platform to support with the HarmonyOS operating system, surpassing the 128KB ceiling of the past generation.
Yu Chengdong, the Chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, has announced that the open source and consumer device version of HarmonyOS already supports 128KB of memory devices.
And, HarmonyOS is now targeting 64KB of memory as the lowest. That’s not it, Yu Chengdong said that such a low-memory device can provide ultra-long battery life, and its single cell can last for an entire year. That’s a huge improvement for the end user experience in IoT devices.

Why does this matter?
The 64KB is too small for Linux or Android; therefore, such devices typical runs lighweight Real-Time Operating systems (RTOS). And its implication comes to devices that don’t store data, such as NB-IoT sensors.
Supporting this device landscape will further improve Huawei’s reach into the market with broader ecosystem expansion. Since Huawei has a larger consumer base in China, it could allow users to get a connected and cross-device experience with such a device with low memory.
The latest announcement from the Huawei chief arrived during the HarmonyOS 7 launch event. You should know that the ultra-long battery life statement is related only to IoT devices and not smartphones.
